Friendship Bread: A Novel by Darien Green

22 Jun

When Julia Everts finds a starter bag of Amish friendship bread on her front porch, she isn’t sure what to think or do. Since the death of her son, she shut off most everyone and cut ties with friends so she really doesn’t know anyone she could share the bread with. But she and her daughter, Grace, decide to make the bread and share it around their small town, not knowing they will change the lives of the people around them as well as their own in the process.

Friendship Bread is uplifting, it’s spiritual and it has a way of changing the way you view the world and people around you. I will tell you that the first couple of chapters were a little hard to follow. There are many characters and if you’re like me … you’ll have a hard time placing circumstances with the people. But I got the hang of it, and you will too.

The life stories and characters in the book are touching. My emotions changed with each character. The way the writer, Darien Green, describes the story, had me laughing and/or crying.  Friendship Bread is sweet and heartwarming and it’s definitely one you’ll want to keep tissues handy while reading. But it was worth it.  Finding commonality among backgrounds and generations and heritages shows just why people need one another to lean on.

If you love reading about food and also enjoy a heartwarming story, this is definitely the perfect novel to pick up. Admittedly, the premise is a bit silly, but you’ll soon find that it doesn’t matter because the book is so easy to become involved in. It’s a quick read, but one well worth putting your time into.
